Leader's Notes: Sometimes theologians distinguish between God's common goodness (all the blessings of life which are available to Christian and non-Christian alike) and his special goodness (those blessings having to do with salvation). Thus every drop of rain, every star-filled night, every bit of food, every good night's sleep, every minute of health, in short, every single thing that makes us happy and sustains us is a gift from him and represents his goodness (his common blessings). Even greater than this, however, is his generosity toward us sinful human beings as it is manifested through redemption (his special blessings). Help the group to think specifically of what their lives would be like without either God's common or special blessings.

Packer writes: "The whole psalm is a majestic panorama of the operations of divine goodness, transforming human lives."1 God's actions reveal goodness in its highest and purest form. His goodness provides the standard for developing this fruit in our own lives. Goodness is primarily a moral quality which has as its standard the moral perfection of God.
