Leader's Notes: Purpose: To see how David's example can encourage us in our struggle for self-control. It will be helpful (although not necessary) for you to read as much of the book of 1 Samuel as possible before leading this study. If people in the group are unfamiliar with 1 Samuel, you may wish to read the following summary: Saul was anointed king over Israel. But because he was disobedient, God decided to take the kingdom from him and give it to David. As a result of this, Saul's wrath and jealousy were kindled toward David, and he tried to kill him at every opportunity. 1 Samuel 26 describes one of his attempts.

Leader's Notes: This question is more suitable for groups whose members are more familiar with one another. It is a question that may bring out deeper feelings. Be sensitive to the possibility that there may be some "spiritual giants" in your group who always seem to experience victory after victory in the Lord. Though they may not intend to brag, don't let the "spiritual pygmies" be discouraged as a result. (Watch for those who become unusually quiet.) Your own willingness to be vulnerable and to share your struggles with self-control will encourage others to be more open and honest.

Leader's Notes: For example, determination, patience, purpose, reasoning, support, etc. Ultimately this bible study points out the purpose of self control is to do the will of God.

Leader's Notes: David refers to Saul as "the Lord s anointed" (1 Samuel 26:9). Kings in Israel were anointed with oil as a sign of being chosen and empowered by God. David's actions are a classic case of respecting someone's office even when the person himself does not deserve respect. David believed that since God had chosen Saul, God would have to remove him from office.

Leader's Notes: If no one else mentions it, you might suggest that it is best to discern God's will before facing a temptation. It is much easier then to follow through with what we know to be right. In the midst of temptation we don't think very clearly!
